Do we know how many volumes there are, and if it's ongoing? You have two listed, but can I get more info?

And how 'bout a rough estimate of volume 2's release date?

I posted volume info on page 2 of this thread.

As for Ryokosha's question, here's a blurb from Erica Friedman's blog, insofar as the details are concerned:
Quote:
Once again, to get you up to date with the story, Hatsukoi Shimai began its life as the cover images for the first three issues of Yuri Shimai magazine. Inside the covers were short text stories about the cover couples - just little vignettes, nothing more. The three couples pictured were Chika and Haruna, Akiho and Touko-sensei, and Miyu and Kirika.

The first two couples were brought to life in the two Koi Shimai Drama CDs, both of which I have reviewed previously. (Here are the reviews for Koi Shimai 1 and Koi Shimai 2) and eventually, after Yuri Shimai folded and was resurrected as Yuri Hime, the series was resurrected as Hatsukoi Shimai, now with longer short stories (does that even make sense?), a manga and the Hatsukoi Shimai Drama CD which, this time, included our third cover couple as well. The manga is so far based on the events of the first two Drama CDs, with some slight alterations.

The manga, while based on the character designs by Hibiki Reine (illustrator for Maria-sama ga Miteru) and the original Drama CDs, is clearly a work by committee. There are a whole host of names for the art, writing and production.

Hatsukoi Shimai is primarily the story of Matsusato Chika who, when she visits the very hoi-poloi girls' school, known as "Tsunojo", meets up with cool upperclassman Kanzaki Haruna. During their day together touring the school, Chika falls in love with Haruna and determines that she will study very very hard and get accepted. Also during the course of the day, she trips and falls. Haruna uses her handkerchief to clean the wound and Chika, moved by Haruna's gentle care, promises to return the handkerchief in the spring when she enters school.

The rest of the details for volumes 1 and 2 can be found HERE

I picked up volume 1 of this yesterday and it's definitely a good read. This is the third title from Seven Seas' Strawberry line I've bought and I have yet to be disappointed. However, I have to admit that I'm still pretty new to yuri romance manga so I don't have much else to compare it too.

--Possible Spoilers Ahead, consider yourself warned--

One thing that struck me about First Love Sisters was how quickly Chika confessed to Haruna. In most of the boy-girl romance manga I've read, if the main character confesses their feelings early on they tend to either get rejected flat out or create an awkward silence which distances the two of them for a while. Reading this it seemed strange to see Chika's feelings accepted and returned in the first book. Is this normal for for yuri romance or is it simply a shorter story than I'm used to and thus moves faster?

This is now unquestionably one to pick up. Can I ask if you got it in a store or online?

I'm pretty sure it depends on the character. In most Shoujo manga the guy is usually either a spineless little wimp or some incarnation of one and can't get his courage up or he's completely oblivious to the situation and has to be kicked into shape. Also the girls in most shoujo are either blindsided by the confession or are tsundere, in which case she's gonna say "no" regardless of whether she really likes him or not... In Saigo no Seifuku (Last Uniform), which is quite yuri, the first confession doesn't happen until the the last page of Vol 2.

Contrast Souma Ogami from Kannazuki no Miko who confesses to
==NO SPOILER TAGS EXIST SO I LEFT OUT THE NAME==
by the end of chapter 3 and even though she doesn't answer him, he is determined to tell her one way or the other and would probably not accept a "no" but keep on pursuing. He is smart, sure of himself (well as much as a teenager can be), and knows what he wants.

Chika is an extremely straight-forward girl who says what she feels without regards to any repurcussions that might happen. So, no, it seems perfectly within her character to go ahead and confess. Also Haruka really likes Chika but doesn't want to hurt her so by the time Chika confesses, she has to make some really hard decisions.

So, to answer your question, it's not a genre thing, it's more of a character development thing.

P.S. Adam, you really need to add spoiler tags to the forum......

That makes sense, Ichigo. Speaking of Kannazuki no Miko, I haven't read any of the manga but I felt really bad for Souma in the anime. The poor guy deserved to get something after all of that.

Six more months until First Love Sisters 2 comes out...

That's the date that was set a while ago, but right now the page for First Love Sisters has TBD for the street date. Is there actually a stall, or did someone mess up on the site?
